Children of the forest

A collection of fairy tales has survived which describes the creatures that live in the forest. The author of these tales is unknown, and the practicality of fairy tales has long lost its meaning as such.

The Dreamers never die and since becoming immortal have ceased having children. Humanity has been modified in such a way that children are no longer born.

And yet, this collection of fairy tales is popular and is still reread from time to time, even by adult dreamers, who know it by heart.

Special abilities

At the end of the turn you must announce which figure you want the ability to be applied to and then roll a d16. If 5 or more is rolled – the selected enemy piece cannot move or attack until the next turn. A special green token is placed under the figure.

The king is the only piece that cannot be chosen. In addition, the current player's king (Dido Lis) can never move from his original position but can attack all other pieces in the spaces adjacent to him in any direction like a normal king in chess.

Lisovyk

Lisovyks in fairy tales are wise creatures that exist in perfect harmony with the forest. They are old, though in the eyes of Dido Lis they look like children. Lisovyks perfectly understand and feel the forest and can help lost travellers find their way.

These magical creatures are peculiar spirits of the forest. If they are insulted by a traveller, the creature can disappear as quickly as it appeared.

Lisovyk corresponds to the pawn in chess and can move in any direction one square (including backwards) as long as its path is not blocked by another figure. It can attack other figures located diagonally from them at a distance of one cell. A d8 is rolled.

Dendroid

Have you ever felt scared in the woods and thought that someone was looking at you? However, when you looked for them, you did not see anyone? These were Dendroids - living trees. These creatures hide and have no desire to cause harm unless someone threatens their interests. The Dendroids only fight to protect their beloved Terra Sancta.

Although they are described in fairy tales, which should give them inauthenticity, there is indirect evidence that they really existed. Modern science simply does not confirm or deny the existence or nonexistence of Dendroids.

Dendroids correspond to rooks in chess and can move in a straight line in any direction as long as the path is not blocked by another figure or until it reaches the edge of the playing field and can attack enemy pieces in any direction (not diagonally). A d16 is rolled.

Unicorn

The Unicorn looks suspiciously like the real creature - Pegasus, but the Dreamers have doubts that such a creature without wings could balance normally, and therefore exist. A unicorn is a Pegasus without wings, but with a horn.

The existence of a Pegasus without wings contradicts science, but archaeologists have found the bones of creatures without wings (although they do not have horns), explaining the find to correspond precisely to the existence of hornless unicorns.

In fairy tales, this is a magical creature without which life is impossible. There is also an assumption that all unicorns were killed by cutting off their horns during one of the wars.

The Unicorn corresponds to knights in chess. They walk and attack using the shape of the letter L. They have the ability to jump over any figure that blocks their path. In the case of an attack with this figure, you must announce out loud the path that the figure will use to attack. A d16 is then rolled, if the enemy piece is not killed, the attacking piece must move back to any free space away from the enemy on the chosen path. See main rules for understanding knight movement.

Mavka

At first glance, it may seem that the Mavka is just a beautiful woman, this is not entirely true. In fairy tales, Mavkas lure talentless travellers with their beauty into a deep forest, where they are then suffocated.

Mavka is a beautiful girl who lives and enjoys the forest, but the main character of the fairytale never succumbs to the tricks of these insidious creatures and does not allow themself to be deceived by her charms.

Mavka corresponds to the bishop in chess. They are able to walk and attack diagonally from any distance as long as another figure is not blocking their path. A d16 is rolled.

Doghead

According to legend, these creatures have one leg, one arm, one eye and the head of a dog. These creatures are giants and much bigger than their opponents. They cannot fight alone and are forced to search for another doghead in order to unite and attack others.

By itself, the doghead is worthless, but once they are united with another one, they combine in one entity with the belt and these two creatures become a formidable living force. In fairy tales, dogheads are always one of the scariest monsters of the forest.

Dido lis (grandpa forest)

It is as old as all the forests of the world and in fairytales was the first tree that was born. The children of the forest consider him not just a wise old man but also their leader. They are loyal to him as their grandfather and almost consider him as their demigod from whom they are descended.

He has lived so long that his existence has become boring and unbearable. He does not even want to capture the Terra Sancta, but all the other children of the forest want it and he is forced to reckon with them. Dido is firmly rooted to the ground and will never really be able to move.

Depending on where the cell with the crown is, Dido Lis can change places with the doghead. A d16 is rolled.
